Bathroom and Vanity Lighting Trends

July 2, 2021 by RP Lighting

Looking for a way to light up your home?

Aside from traditional overhead lights and table lamps, good lighting can really change the feeling of a room. You can take your bedroom and bathroom from dark and dingy to cozy and welcoming with the right lighting!

Bathrooms are often overlooked from a lighting point of view, but lighting has the capacity to influence your mood during different points of the day – energizing you in the morning or encouraging you to relax in the evening.

Good lighting in a bathroom is especially helpful when you’re washing and grooming. Optimized lighting and daylighting are also important for circadian rhythms, which can play a big role in your overall health.

Basics of Vanity Lighting

The vanity area is the most important space when it comes to bathroom lighting. Most of your time in the bathroom will be spent there, and improper lighting can cast shadows, making it harder and more inconvenient when you’re getting ready for the day.

Here’s some basic design principles to consider for your vanity:

  • Keep lights as close to the mirror as possible and around as many sides as possible – think Hollywood dressing rooms! Use the 2+1 rule: when you have one light on the left, one on the right, and one on the top. This provides even, shadow-free lighting.
  • Utilize vertical and horizontal sconces to even out the lighting on the sides and top of your mirror. Sconces also diffuse the lighting so it will provide a softer, less harsh look.
  • Don’t forget light color! Picking the correct color temperature is essential. Look for color temperature of the light to be around 3000 on the Kelvin scale or “warm white.” This is a neutral shade that works well for most tones. Learn more about light color here.

Besides the considerations above, also think about lighting principles like proper light levels and the difference between day and night lighting. If you have more questions, we can help! We can also help you design the perfect lighting for the size of your space.
