A Guide to Choosing the Right Vanity Lighting for Your Bathroom Remodel

June 2, 2025 by RP Lighting

Bathroom remodels offer a chance to create a space that is not only functional but also a personal sanctuary. A crucial element in achieving both is the vanity lighting. More than just a light source, the right vanity lighting can enhance your daily grooming routine, set the mood, and elevate the overall aesthetic of your bathroom. But with a myriad of options available, how do you choose the perfect fit for your remodel? This guide will walk you through the essential considerations.

This article provides a guide to selecting the right vanity lighting for a bathroom remodel, highlighting different types such as over-the-mirror fixtures, sconces, and lighted mirrors.

Understanding Vanity Lighting Types

Vanity lighting comes in several common forms, each offering distinct advantages:

  • Over-the-Mirror Fixtures: These are perhaps the most traditional. Mounted directly above the mirror, they provide direct light onto the face. Styles range from multi-bulb bars to single, impactful fixtures.
  • Sconces: Mounted on either side of the mirror, sconces offer a more even distribution of light, minimizing shadows on the face. They can be a stylish addition and work well for creating a balanced look, especially with larger mirrors or double vanities.
  • Pendant Lights: While less common, pendant lights can be used on either side of the mirror, particularly in bathrooms with higher ceilings. They add a decorative element and can contribute to both task and ambient lighting.

Key Considerations

Choosing the right type is just the beginning. Several factors play a critical role in ensuring your vanity lighting is both functional and flattering:

  • Placement is Paramount: The positioning of your vanity lights significantly impacts their effectiveness. The goal is to illuminate your face evenly, reducing shadows that can distort your reflection and make tasks like applying makeup or shaving difficult.
    • Over-the-mirror lights should ideally be placed high enough to cast light down onto the face without creating harsh shadows under the eyes or chin. A general guideline is 75-80 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture, or at least 3 inches above the top of the mirror.
    • Sconces are best mounted at eye level, typically 60-70 inches from the floor, spaced evenly on either side of the mirror. The ideal distance between sconces is usually around 36-40 inches for a single vanity.
  • Brightness Matters (Lumens): The intensity of the light, measured in lumens, is crucial for task lighting at the vanity. The American Lighting Association recommends a minimum of 1600 lumens for vanity lighting, though this can vary depending on the fixture type and size of the vanity. Integrated LED fixtures can be more efficient, potentially requiring slightly fewer lumens (around 1200) for similar brightness. Dimmable options are highly recommended to adjust the light level for different times of day and tasks.
  • Energy Efficiency (LEDs): Opting for LED vanity lights is a smart choice for energy savings and longevity. LED bulbs consume significantly less energy and have a much longer lifespan compared to incandescent bulbs, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Vanity Lighting: Putting it All Together

When planning your bathroom remodel, consider your vanity lighting early in the process. Think about the size of your vanity and mirror, the overall style of your bathroom, and your personal needs for task lighting. Layering your lighting with a combination of vanity lights, overhead lighting, and perhaps accent lighting can create a versatile and well-illuminated space.
