Chandeliers vs. Pendants: Different Types of Hanging Fixtures

Pendants

According to Lights Online, “in lighting, the word “pendants” refers to any lighting fixture mounted on a chain, stem, cable, or wire that hangs down into a space.” Pendants typically feature only a single lightbulb into their fixtures. Additionally, pendants lean towards a more modern, simplistic look and can double as a decorative, mood-setting piece.

These hanging lamps are further broken down into these categories:

• Bowl pendants (has a bowl-shaped diffuser)
• Bell pendants (the glass is shaped like a bell)
• Drum pendants (often has a fabric diffuser)
• Mini pendants (smaller, more slender lights often used in multiples)
• Linear pendants (multiple light sources on a single canopy).

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are decorative hanging lights suspended from the ceiling with multiple lights incorporated into a single fixture.

Some have multiple “arms”, and chandeliers often are used to set a more formal tone in an entryway or dining room. Chandeliers tend to be more intricate, and are usually designed to provide more ambient lighting.

• Drum chandeliers
• Tiered chandeliers
• Candle chandeliers
• Transitional chandeliers
